United Kingdom Holidays 2025

Public holidays in the United Kingdom, commonly referred to as bank holidays, are days where most businesses and essential services are closed although an increasing number of retail businesses (especially the larger ones) do open on some of the public holidays, in accordance with trading laws.

Only four holidays are observed in all countries of the United Kingdom. They are: New Year’s Day, May Day or Early May Bank Holiday, Christmas Day and Boxing Day. Most other holidays are decided upon by each of the four nations in the UK, which do not always coincide with bank holidays, and instead observe traditional local custom and practice for their public holidays.

The United Kingdom has no national day holiday marked or celebrated for its formal founding date. Increasingly, there are calls for public holidays on the patron saints’ days in England, Scotland, and Wales (Northern Ireland already has St. Patrick’s Day as a holiday). Here is the holiday schedule for the countries of the UK through 2025 and beyond:

UK Business Holidays and Vacations

While public holidays are nationally mandated days off, UK businesses also have their own vacation policies. These vary depending on the company size, industry, and employee contracts.

Here are some general observations about business holidays and vacations in the UK:

  • Statutory Entitlement:  By law, all employees in the UK are entitled to a minimum of 28 days paid vacation per year (including bank holidays). This is one of the most generous statutory minimums in the world.
  • Additional Vacation Days: Many companies offer additional vacation days on top of the statutory minimum.  The average additional vacation entitlement is 5-10 days, bringing the total vacation package to 33-38 days per year. Some companies, particularly in tech and finance sectors, may offer even more generous vacation packages.
  • Vacation Allowance Trends: There is a trend towards more flexible vacation arrangements in the UK. This could include offering employees the ability to purchase additional vacation days, carry over unused vacation days to the following year, or take unpaid leave for extended periods.
  • School Holidays:  School holidays can also impact business operations, especially for companies with employees who have children. School holidays typically occur during the summer, Easter, and Christmas breaks. Businesses may experience higher absenteeism or require adjustments to working hours during these periods. Some companies offer flexible work arrangements or childcare support programs to help employees manage their work-life balance during school holidays.

Understanding employee vacation patterns is important for maintaining smooth business operations. Here are some pointers how:

Staff Scheduling: Be prepared for potential staffing shortages during peak vacation periods. Consider implementing flexible work arrangements, such as remote working or compressed workweeks, to accommodate employee vacations. You may also want to consider hiring temporary staff to cover gaps during busy periods.

Communication and Deadlines: Adjust communication and project deadlines to account for potential employee absences. Communicate important deadlines well in advance and be prepared to adjust them if necessary. It can also be helpful to stagger vacation requests to ensure adequate staffing levels are maintained throughout the year.

Employee Morale: Offering competitive vacation packages and flexible work arrangements can boost employee morale and productivity. Studies have shown that employees who feel they have a good work-life balance are more engaged, productive, and less likely to leave their jobs.
