What is CE marking?
According to Wikipedia and the EU, CE marking is a manufacturer’s declaration that a product meets the requirements of the applicable EC directives. Basically, CE marking allows goods to move within the European market. CE marking shows that manufacturers have confirmed that their products meet EU safety, health and/or environment requirements, that they have complied with EU legislation and that their product is able to freely trade within the single market. By placing CE marking on a product, a manufacturer is declaring their products conform to the legal requirements required for CE marking ( europa, trade).
CE marking is required on many products traded within the single market for the EEA. If you are interested in engaging in trade within the EEA, you will need to conform to this regulation if your product requires it. Products subject to CE marking range widely from electrical equipment, medical devices, machinery, toys, to pressure equipment and more ( , emergobyul, europa).
Germany often leads the way in creating regulations and guidelines that become the basis for EU requirements, as well as being quicker in implementation, making attentiveness to German guidelines critical to stay ahead of EU regulation ( linkedin).
The CE marking process involves six steps:
- Identify the applicable directive for your product category.
- Verify specific harmonized standards required.
- Determine if third-party (notified body) assessment is required.
- Test products and check conformity to EU legislation.
- Draw up and maintain technical documentation (the Technical File).
- Affix the CE marking according to standardized format and placement rules ( epitgroup, europa).
Additional quality marks like GS (tested safety), VDE (electronics), and TÜV certifications help acceptance in Germany but are not legally required ( din).
From 2027, new EU rules will extend CE marking to include digital product cybersecurity compliance, reflecting the growing importance of software in machinery and connected goods ( cadfem).
For textiles like clothing and furniture, specific labeling requirements in German language and metric sizing apply regulated by the Bundesministerium für Wirtschaft und Arbeit ( trade).
Resources and databases to assist CE marking include:
- Nando (notified bodies) database
- European Commission CE Marking portal
- DIN German Standards Institute
- US NIST Notify Us service ( europa, din).
Adhering correctly to CE marking ensures market access, compliance with health and safety laws, and helps avoid costly recalls and penalties ( linkedin, europa).
