Surprisingly, Kentucky Fried Chicken is huge at Christmas in Japan. The tradition originated with Takeshi Okawara, the enterprising manager of the first KFC in Japan who opened in Nagoya in November 1970. Supposedly, he heard expats saying they missed turkey at Christmas and chicken was as close as they could get in Japan. It accounts for a third of all sales of KFC per year in Japan.
